about
An act of sonic archaeology, Edison Moon carries on the tradition of sampling as alchemy established by such artists as John Oswald, Philip Jeck and Tim Hecker; and builds on the techniques of working with sourced recordings developed on SIGHUP's previous works such as Reflection of Others and SIGHUP in Seminary Boy Sonata.

Edison Moon is based entirely on raw digital transfers of wax cylinder recordings originally recorded for Edison Records in the early Twentieth Century. The raw 24-bit transfers were made and distributed as public domain by the Cylinder Preservation and Digitization Project at University of California, Santa Barbara Library.

For Edison Moon, all source materials are songs containing Moon in their titles. The original songs used for this project were:

By the light of the silvery moon
as performed by Ada Jones
Good-night, moonlight
as performed by the American Quartet
In the evening by the moonlight
as performed by the Edison Male Quartet
Keep on a-shining silv'ry moon
as performed by the Edison Male Quartet
Good-bye sunshine, hello moon
as performed by Helen Clark
I'm smiling at de moon dat smiles at you (My best girl)
as performed by Irving Gillette
By the light of the silvery moon
as performed by the New York Military Band
Ah, moon of my delight
as performed by Reed Miller

SIGHUP has transformed the decayed remains of the once state-of-the-art into a work of mysticism and pathos--celebrating, contributing to and lamenting our search for hidden knowledge.
